The University for Development Studies (UDS) has sent out a strong statement to its students engaged in cyber crime to desist from the practice or risk outright dismissal.
Professor Yakubu Haruna, Vice Chancellor of the university, gave the warning in a speech read for him during the 22nd matriculation ceremony at the Wa campus of the school.
[contextly_sidebar id=”It0xWEQnDSyy1cwFtHQRQnI1PcBtmp3p”]He said even though the university recognizes the importance of the internet in knowledge generation and acquisition for academic work, the school is also that some students use it to engage in fraud, hence, their decision to descend heavily on culprits to deter both current and future students of the school.
“The internet is to be used for purely academic work and not to engage in cyber crime or other immoral activities. We will be monitoring, if you are caught we will send you home” Prof. Haruna warned.
He advised the students to take their studies seriously, adding that “the school will continue to offer the necessary support and facilities to enhance a congenial atmosphere for students to pursue their academic work.”
The Vice Chancellor revealed that the UDS will also introduce online registration of all courses offered by continuing students with effect from next academic year (2015/2016).
He further disclosed that the academic board of the school has approved 7 educational institutions to run affiliate courses with the university.
They include: New Life College, International Centre for Management Studies, Technical university College of Tamale, Premier Nursing Training College and the Christian University college of Ghana. The rest are Withrow University College and the Yendi Health Assistants Training College.
In all, 6,334 students, representing 34% of the total number of 18,961 applicants were admitted to pursue various degree courses in all the 4 campuses of the university.
The Wa campus recorded the highest number of admissions of 2,681.
It is followed by the Tamale campus with 1,737 admissions.
The Navrongo campus recorded 1,278 while the Nyamkpala campus could only take 638 students for the academic year.
274 students, representing a 72% increment over last year’s figure of 197 were also admitted to pursue various graduate programmes.
