Tension is mounting in the Kpalsi South community near the Tamale Polytechnic in the Sagnarigu District of the Northern Region.

Some concerned residents of the Block ‘B’ community are up in arms against the installation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas filling station, closer to their homes.

The residents in protest, have pulled down the fenced wall of the said LPG filling station.

Spokesperson for the aggrieved Concerned Kpalsi South residents, Abdul Majeed Inusah told Citi News that they will fiercely resist the project.

He said the chief of Kpalsi and his elders have also kicked against the project.

He accused the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Town and Country Planning (TCP) of conniving with the owner to complete the project.

He also accused the Sagnarigu District Assembly for turning a blind eye on the frustrations of the community members.

He thus disclosed their intention to seek court injunction on the project if the relevant authorities fail to stop the owner from making attempts to complete it.

“Knowing from Act 462 that the Sagnarigu District Assembly is the planning authority and from section 49 subsection(1) that a physical development shall not be carried out in a district without prior approval in the form of a written permit granted by the district planning authority: subsection (4) specifying that in determining an application for a permit to develop prior to the adoption of an approved district plan, the district planning authority shall consult the prescribed public agencies and local communities, we humbly informed the district assembly.”

“In June 2013, we wrote to the Sagnarigu District Assembly on the installation of the LPG filling station.”

According to Abdul Majeed Inusah, every legitimate means will be applied to stop the installation of the LPG station.

“We consider the provision in Act 462 to ensure sustainable human settlements development are based on principles of efficiency, orderliness, safety and healthy growth of communities.”
