The 168 housing units project allocated to the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) has been completed at a cost of Gh¢45 million.
Construction of the houses, in Accra, began in August 2013 and comprises 32 three-bedroom apartments and 136 two-bedroom units.
The BNI housing units form part of the government’s security housing project aimed at providing official residence for security personnel.
Inspecting the project at Sakumono last Thursday, the Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Alhaji Collins Dauda, explained that the units were duty posts for which reason members of staff who left the BNI also had to vacate the residence.
He expressed satisfaction with the work done so far and confirmed that the project was ready to be inaugurated by President John Dramani Mahama and handed over to the BNI.
Maintenance
Alhaji Dauda said to ensure the proper maintenance of the apartments, the ministry in collaboration with the BNI would set up a maintenance unit to take up that responsibility.
He said beneficiaries would be expected to pay a minimal amount of money as maintenance premium, to prevent a situation where the BNI would have to fall on the already limited government financial resources to maintain the property.
The two-phased project was constructed by an Israeli construction firm, Amandi Ghana Company Limited.
TDC reforms
Alhaji Dauda also inspected work on the ongoing redevelopment of the defunct Ghana National Trading Corporation (GNTC) shops in Tema.
The site initially housed a number of low buildings that had been demolished by the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) to make way for the construction of an eight storey building made up of shops and offices.
The project forms part of the Tema Transformation Project aimed at improving the Tema community.
Alhaji Dauda lauded TDC for the work done and for not depending on the government financially to fund the project.
He said the corporation had exhausted its development lands and, therefore, the government was in the process of transforming it into a limited liability company to enable it to expand its operations.
Alhaji Dauda said by the close of the year, the process would have been completed.
