The Ghana National Association of Teachers(GNAT) is considering suing the Ghana Education Service (GES) for freezing the August salaries of sixty headmasters in the East Akyem District in the Eastern Region.
The headmasters are being accused by the GES for failing to submit mock examination results to the municipal directorate in the area.
The acting President of GNAT, Mawusi Buadi described the action by District Director of Education as “most unfortunate.”
[contextly_sidebar id=”5EWSLJ06dAxRZnK6Hvq0CQJjYqrVx8pk”]He condemned the decision by the GES to freeze salaries saying “as much as the GNAT does not condone wrong doing on the part of teachers, it is our opinion that meting out harsh punishment to teachers will be counter-productive”
“…teachers receive house salaries so for the District Director of Education to embargo the full salaries of heads of high schools for the reason given is most unfortunate,” he added.
In May, the Greater Accra Regional branch of GNAT also gave government a one-month ultimatum to implement decisions that were presented in a communiqué after a meeting at the Ministry of Education with other stakeholders.
Issues addressed in the communiqué include: incremental credits where it was recommended that Fair Wages and Salaries Commission should liaise with Controller and Accountant General’s Department to let the Ministry of Finance know the total cost of the incremental credits for 2011 and 2012.
GNAT criticized government for deliberately delaying the payment of its iincremental credits and other allowances.
It further described as unfortunate, government’s failure to release monies for the payment of their 2nd tier occupational pension scheme.
According to the Association, the government’s delay in making such payments was “ a deliberate ploy to deny teachers their due.”
It therefore called on government to expedite action on its payment as proof of its commitment to fulfill promises made to them.
