Flood waters have cut off over 30 communities in the Adaklu District of the Volta region from other villages, after torrential rains hit parts of the region last week.
The flood waters have completely submerged three major roads leading to the district capital; Adaklu Waya and surrounding villages.
Residents from neighbouring communities who work at the district capital have been trapped.
The situation has also affected health delivery in the district, forcing residents to carry health workers shoulder-high to cross the flood waters to their centres to take care of patients.
The fate of most students in the district also hangs in the balance since the only secondary school in the district; Adaklu-Waya SHS is currently inaccessible.
The member of parliament for the area Hon. Kwame Agbodza, and the chief of the area Togbui Lablulu Tegbeza V have described the situation as “dire,” which require swift and lasting solutions.
‘’We are only appealing to the agencies involved that they should come to our aid because when schools reopen, the students wouldn’t be able to go to school’’ he lamented in an interview with citifmonline.com.
He further said ‘’we appreciate all that government is doing for us as a people but we believe that this particular situation needs a lasting solution.’’
Togbui Lablulu Tegbeza V noted that ‘’this river in 2011 got flooded in a situation like this, a woman was trying to cross it in the night and got drowned and died.’’
This, he said ‘’ compelled late president John Evan Atta Mills to visit the affected areas.’’
He added that ‘’the town has currently been totally cut off from Mafi Kumasi, Akatsi and Kpetoe which depend on foodstuffs and other agricultural produce from the area.’’
The affected roads are Waya-Mafi-Kumasi, Waya- Ziope Akatsi , and Waya-Agotime Kpetoe.
