The authorities of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) have stated that there has been significant reduction in the number of cholera and food poisoning cases in the school.
This comes on the back of reports that some students fell sick after eating food from a popular food joint in the school.
In an effort to contain the situation, the school closed down the science market and the main market where many students buy food on campus.
[contextly_sidebar id=”CbDwhja7vjcumJlfLtxr4HqU4do4wc82″]In an interview with Citi News, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Major Retired Baah Bentum explained the students who fell sick were being treated for both cholera and food poisoning because the symptoms were similar.
Due to the similarities, “it is better to start the cholera treatment because that one is more comprehensive and takes care of the food poisoning…” he said.
“When they come, the symptoms are similar and it is after further investigations that the doctors are able to pin point that is it food poisoning or cholera,” Bentum added.
According to the UCC PRO, all food vendors on campus are currently undergoing screening and are being vaccinated as well to forestall future disease outbreaks.
He recalled that when the students began reporting to the hospital revealed they either ate waakye or kenkey from two sources hence, the decision to screen all food vendors.
Seven regions in the southern belt of Ghana have been battling with Cholera over the past few months.
Over 120 persons have lost their lives while about 10,000 cases have been recorded.
The Greater Accra Region which was the worst affected is recording a reduction in the number of cases being reported daily at the various health facilities.
This has been attributed to the clean-up exercises which have been carried out by the Accra Metroplitan Assembly and the public education which is ongoing.
But the Western Region and now, the Central region are recorded more cases since last week.
They have since called for support to help curb the spread of the cholera disease.
