District Directors of education in the Northern Region have defied the Ghana Education Service (GES) directive asking pupil teachers across the country to vacate their post.
For a simple reason of failing to upgrade themselves whilst in active service, the GES acting Director General, Charles Aheto Tsegah recently announced that all pupil teachers should be laid off to make room for trained teachers at the basic level.
Citi News checks uncovered that the acting GES Director General failed to issue official correspondence in that regard.

They argued that the decision if implemented will worsen the falling standard of education in rural communities.
According to them, the role of pupil teachers in the region cannot be underestimated for which reason their outright dismissal will cause more harm.
They suggested the need to maintain pupil teachers and encourage them to upgrade themselves.
Tolon District Director of Education, Amoli Abaako exclusively told Citi News majority of teaching staff under his jurisdiction are pupil teachers.
He said any attempt to dismiss them will affect his administration because trained teachers often reject postings to deprived communities in the area.
He lamented, “I know that without the pupil teachers some of our schools will be empty and it will affect education especially in those schools.”
