Finance minister, Seth Tekper has hinted to Citi Business News that government will reconsider a move to issue diaspora bonds soon.

A diaspora bond is issued at nationals who have moved outside their countries of origin.

The plan for a diaspora bond has been on the table for some time but for some reasons has not seen the light of day.

Ghana enjoys significant receipt of foreign exchange through remittances.

This year alone, remittances into Ghana were about 692 million dollars at the end of May.

The African Development Bank Group has also affirmed that issuing diaspora bonds may give Ghana a better alternative to donor funds which has had some issues lately.

Speaking to Citi Business News, Seth Tekper said government will reconsider the move.

“Usually remittances are for capital projects to build houses. You know many people outside have their kids attending school here or they support others here. They do come”, he said.

“At a point in time we attempted to do a diaspora bond, it is something we will try and revisit”, he added.
