Seek approval before demolishing structures- MMDAs told

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, has directed Chief Executive Officers of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to seek ministerial approval before embarking on any demolition exercise in their communities.

[contextly_sidebar id=”pbNK4AM6vfooLnROcBGW7mtsPFXVezIi”]In the Greater Accra Region, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) recently demolished a slum, Mensah Guinea, behind the Arts Center due to the poor insanitary conditions there. It also executed demolishing exercises in areas including Kaneshie, Odorna, Akokorfoto in Dansoman, among others.

Currently about 300 homes in Osu have been earmarked for demolishing by the AMA.

Similar demolition exercises have been carried out by some MMDAs within the country.

Such exercises usually result in people being displaced while others losing their homes, belongings, shops, sheds, and wares in the process.

Some also lose their lives as a result of the struggles between them and security operatives who supervise such exercises.

Meanwhile, a statement signed by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Julius Debrah, on Wednesday, warned the MMDAs to seek permission from the ministry before embarking on any demolition.

It warned: “any Chief Executive of MMDA who flouts the directive will have him or herself to blame”.
