The Amasaman Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs Barbara Tetteh-Charwey, has sentenced Nii Adu Otu, an elder of Addyman, near Amasaman, to a four-year prison term with hard labour.

When the case was first mentioned in court, he pleaded not guilty but subsequently changed his plea to guilty.

Nii Otu was charged with causing harm to Frank Okai, an elder of the town.

The facts of the case, as presented by the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Ben Kofi Annan, were that both Nii Otu, a plumber and Okai, an electrical technician, lived at Addyman near Amasaman.

Chief Inspector Annan said at about 6:15 p.m. on June 10, 2014 a meeting was scheduled for all the elders of the village. But when Okai, who is one of the elders, reported for the meeting, he was sent away by Nii Otu and two others who are currently at large.

He said when Okai left the meeting place, Nii Adu and two of his accomplices followed him and beat him up mercilessly.

He said Nii Otu pierced the right eye of Okai with an implement and he fell unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital where he was admitted.

Medical reports later indicated that the victim’s eye had been completely damaged.

Nii Otu was subsequently arrested, charged before the court, tried and sentenced accordingly.
