Pressure group, Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), is calling for an immediate exclusion of school pupils from Independence Day parades.

The group says the annual ritual of having school children march on Independence Day is archaic and primitive.

Citing Thursday’s incident where hundreds of school children were drenched in rain during the Ghana’s 57th Independence Day celebration in Accra, AFAG described it as unacceptable.

The Director of Operations for the group, Abu Ramadan told Citi News, they will wage a crusade to stop the practice.

He suggested that more creative ways could be developed to “remind the kids of what independence celebration but not to put them out at the mercy of the weather.”

He also recalled that during last year’s celebration, “a lot of the kids collapsed out of dehydration, out of the scorching sun and this time round, the heavy rains that came…we ask; what is the health situation of those children who were drenched by the rain?”

He questioned what steps are being taken by the relevant authorities to ensure the affected students are taken care of to prevent any illness as a result of the rain.
