An ex-police officer, Lance Corporal Paapa Nyaba, who was accused of kissing an eight-year-old girl at Pokuase, is said to have escaped from the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, where he had been sent for examination.

The prosecutor on the case, Detective Inspector Kofi Atimbire, told the Accra Circuit Court that he got the information on the escape of the policeman from the case investigator when he went to check on the accused person.

The court had earlier ordered that Nyaba should be sent to the psychiatric hospital for medical attention after he had made certain gestures while in the dock.

The court, presided over by Mrs Rita Agyeman-Budu, ordered the police to obtain official documents of the accused person’s escape.

The matter was therefore adjourned to September 24.

Charge

Nyaba who was charged with indecent assault, has however denied the offence.

The court admitted Nyaba to bail in the sum of GH¢2,000.00 with one surety.

Prosecuting, Detective Inspector Atimbire, told the court that the victim’s mother was the complainant, and that the accused person resided at Pokuase Mayera in the Ga West District of the Greater Accra Region.

The prosecutor said sometime in February this year, at about 2:30 p.m., the complainant sent her daughter to buy groundnuts for her from a nearby shop.

Upon entering the shop in which Nyaba was also buying biscuits, Nyaba placed his hand on the victim’s shoulders and asked her if her father was a policeman and demanded to know her name.

The prosecution said the accused person then suddenly grabbed the victim’s cheek with his two hands and kissed her passionately on her lips and told her that she was beautiful.

Detective Inspector Atimbire said after the act, the victim informed her mother who led her to identify the accused person.

Nyaba was apprehended by some people around and handed over to the police. Nyaba, however, denied the offence during interrogation.
