The Municipal Chief Executive for Tema, Isaac Ashai Odamtten is calling on government to upgrade the Tema General hospital to the status of a regional hospital.

This, according to him, will enable the hospital deliver efficiently on its core mandate of providing quality health care to patients.

As the main referral health centre for most hospitals in Tema and its environs, the hospital has not seen any major rehabilitation, since its construction in 1954.

The hospital is presently faced with number of challenges impeding the provision of quality healthcare.

Presently, the hospital’s maternity wards is too small to serve the number of women who come to the facility.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Isaac Ashai Odamtten emphasized the need to upgrade the facilty in order to meet the needs of the increasing population.

“It is time for us to look at Tema regional hospital as a regional hospital because most of the institutions or establishment fall within the catchment area of Tema and Tema is seen as a region to a very large extent so I think it is time for us to expand the hospital to be able to attend to patients from other areas.”

He said though the hospital administration is working with the limited resources government provides, the hospital still needs a face-lift to attend to the growing population.

“Since I took office, I have inspected an uncompleted project which is already under construction. We had to look at the extent of work that has been done and we are now doing the costing and we want to commit resources into it but we must all admit that Tema General Hospital now requires a facelift to make it a regional hospital that can attend to the numerous patients,” he explained.
