Mahama congratulates Martha Bissah

President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Ghana’s first ever gold medalist, Martha Bissah, describing her achievement as outstanding and an encouragement to the youth and athletics in general.

Martha Bissah was the first Ghanaian to win an Olympic gold medal after running a life time best and a new junior national record of 2:04.90 to snatch victory in the 800m final at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China.

Receiving the 17 year old gold medalist at the Flagstaff House on Monday, President Mahama praised her for the quality she showed at the Olympics.

He further commended her resilience and directed the Ghana Athletics Committee to nurture her for the good of Ghana.

“I will ask the Olympic Committee to pay special attention to you and give you every opportunity to develop this talent for the interest of the nation.We should create a system where we are able to catch these talents very young and groom them and train them to become some of the super athletes that we wish they become in the future,”President Mahama stated.

For her part, Martha Bissah was grateful for the honour and promised to concentrate on her training in order to win more medals.

“I feel very proud, the game was very tough but I was able to conquer them. I will say glory be to God and all Ghana Athletics Association members,” she said.
