The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyapong says the party is ready for Sunday’s nationwide Super Delegates’ Congress.
“We are assiduously preparing for Sunday’s special voting…we are very ready for the election on Sunday,” he said.
Ghana’s largest opposition political party will on Sunday undertake a special voting exercise to reduce the number of presidential candidate aspirants from seven to five in accordance with the party’s constitution.
The seven aspirants include; two time presidential candidate of the NPP, Nana Akufo Addo, former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyeremanten, second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Ghartey, former Minister of State, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, former Information Minister, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, MPs, Kofi Osei Ameyaw and Francis Addai Nimoh.
781 delegates made up of leaders of the party across the country will be mandated to cast their vote to select the five aspirants to contest the final flagbearership position of the NPP.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, Agyapong said the party leadership was a bit taken “aback that somebody will take us to court on this matter [super delegates’ congress] and we are very happy that the court has done the right thing to throw out this vexatious suit.”
He remarked that the party is focusing on Sunday’s event and al is being done to ensure it goes on without any challenges.
He disclosed that the presidential aspirants were allowed to send their agents to the printing house to monitor the printing of the ballot papers.
Every candidate was also given a list of potential voters a week ago “so they had a critical look at that. A few of the numbers have changed because we just realized that some of our founding fathers have passed on and we hadn’t made the necessary adjustments but I believe 781 is the number that we are looking to vote on Sunday.”
The Electoral Commission (EC) will set up polling stations in 10 regional capitals and at the party headquarters in Asylum Down in Accra.
The largest voting preparation, according to Agyapong will be in Kumasi which has 132 delegates and the lowest will be in the Upper West Region, Wa.
“We’ve tried very hard to ensure that we go according to the guidelines that have been provided by the national council that there should be openness, there should be transparency in whatever we have done,” he added.
Voting will commence at 8am and close at 3pm on Sunday.
