The workers union of Golden Tulip hotel is accusing the director of finance and administration Ernest Asamoah and some other members of management of the hotel of embezzling 15 million dollars.
According to the workers, the money was to be used for the hotel’s renovation project, however, the hotel is still in a mess less than two years after the renovation.
The workers today, August 28, 2014, petitioned President John Mahama for the second time this year to intervene and address the growing tension in the hotel.
On August 8, 2014, the unionize workers of Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra petitioned the President and raised various charges of corruption and mismanagement against the management of the hotel.
The petition sent to President Mahama cited by Citi Business News said, ‘ever since the completion of the renovation, they have been using a huge chunk of our revenue for maintenance, which is unacceptable”.
The workers are also accusing management of the hotel of procuring inferior materials and products for the hotel.
The petition further states that, “the management team are paid travel allowances of $11,000.00 together with plane tickets for husband, wife and four children and take GH¢30,000.00 allowances each bi-annually. Their previous salaries ranges from GH¢12,000.00 to GH¢14,000.00, their current salaries have been taken off the system.
Junior managers are also paid bi-annual allowances ranging from GH¢14,500.00 – GH¢17,500.00, while ordinary staff members retire on paltry packages”.
Speaking to Citi Business News the workers union’s first trustee, Mustapha Quansah, said President John Mahama must set up a committee to investigate the allegations of embezzlement being leveled against managers of the hotel.
One of the accused, the director of finance and administration Ernest Asamoah has refused to comment on the issue saying he will formally respond to the allegations if called upon by President John Mahama.
Golden Tulip hotel has been in the news for some time now over its workers condition of service.
The workers recently demonstrated against management of the hotel over poor conditions of service and mismanagement.
The chairman of the workers union and 15 others were also dragged to court for chasing out and threatening managers of the hotel.
The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union has stepped in to resolve the impasse between the workers and management.
