Citifmonline.com investigations have revealed that, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has turned an area close to the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) and the Agbobloshie market into a landfill site.
According to residents, the assembly started dumping refuse at the site three months ago.
When citifmonline.com arrived at the site, there were trucks offloading garbage.
Residents and business owners in the area are calling on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to intervene, as the situation is negatively affecting their health.
The site, which serves as a dumping ground for e-waste materials, is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and a defecating ground for some residents living within the Abbosey Okai area.
The leadership of ICGC has also petitioned the EPA and the AMA over the new landfill site.
Meanwhile, operators of a kraal and an abattoir cited just around the landfill site have also complained about the effect of the location of the dump site saying some of the workers have been hit with cholera as a result of the rubbish.
Over 6,000 cholera cases have been recorded so far in the region.
45 persons have since died from the disease.
Residents say the AMA is to blame for the outbreak of the disease due to its failure to manage solid and liquid waste.
However, the Metropolitan Chief executive of the AMA, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije has refuted allegations it has created a new dump site and insists the landfill site is only to help reclaim the land.
“At ICGC there is an opening there we have to fill. So that is what we have done, we have filled it and we are capping.
“This is to make the environment cleaner than it has ever been. I can still tell you the fifteen sites we have identified have all been cleared,” he explained
