The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has ordered the closure of all shops within the metropolis on Thursday for a massive clean-up exercise.

According to the AMA this is to enable the assembly clean all markets in a bid to rid the metropolis of the mountains of filth.

The clean-up exercise comes in the wake of serious cholera outbreak  in the city.

The outbreak has affected over six thousand people and killed about 45 persons.

A statement from the Assembly further directed that all sub-metro councils and waste management contractors should provide equipment and containers for the exercise.

The clean up exercise will start from 6am to 12 pm.

Accra has been innuadated with rubbish with the recent refusal of waste collection companies to collect waste generated by residents due to government indebtedness.

Government has since paid half of  its debt to these companies but local assemblies say the attitude of residents prevents them from keeping the city clean.
