The Bawku Divisional Police Command in the Upper East Region has slammed the media for their speculative reportage on happenings in the area.

This follows renewed violence in the area on August 22 after two people were killed on August 19.

Some 18 suspects have since been arrested and transferred to the regional capital, Bolgatanga for further investigations.

But the Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Kaledzi Tefutor in an interview with Citi News questioned the haste with which media houses reported on happenings in the area without confirmation from the Police.

“I just want to talk about the way the media houses are reporting cases from Bawku. It is becoming very appalling… if they stand somewhere in their armchairs and report, they even make things difficult for us so they should be circumspect in what they report,” he lamented.

Meanwhile, the Police are currently on a man hunt to arrest the owner of an AK 47 riffle with 10 rounds of ammunition which was retrieved last Friday.

According to Chief Superintendent Kaledzi Tefutor, further investigations are being carried out to trace the owner of the weapon.

However, the Police say it is still unclear what triggered the shooting incident last Friday.

This is despite reports linking the renewed violence to the long standing chieftaincy dispute between the rival Mamprusis and Kusasis in the area.
