The Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has ordered  all its officials to cease making public statements on the internal conflicts raging within the party and focus on issues affecting the lives of Ghanaians.

The directive comes on the back of  the violent clashes that occurred at the party’s headquarters on Tuesday.

Machete-wielding supporters of the party stormed a press conference which was being addressed by the National Chairman and the General Secretary over the removal of the acting Communications Director, Perry Okudzeto by the two.

A statement issued after the meeting, which was held on Thursday  said “All Party Officers, Functionaries and Communicators should desist from making public statements relating to current internal party issues.

“The Council of Elders directed that the embargo on press statements also include the electronic and social media and that anyone who violates this stipulation will be subject to the full application of the Party’s disciplinary procedures”.

Below is the full statement from the party

STATEMENT BY THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF ELDERS ON RECENT HAPPENINGS IN THE PARTY

The NPP National Council of Elders met at the National Party Headquarters to deliberate on current party issues. All elected party officers attended the meeting at the invitation of the Council of Elders.

The Council of Elders discussed with and counseled as follows:

1. There should be an urgent meeting of the Steering Committee to resolve all outstanding issues. The Steering Committee meeting has thus been scheduled for Monday 25 August, 2014 to resolve the details of all the issues involved. The meeting will be attended by representatives of the National Council of Elders.

2. All Party Officers, Functionaries and Communicators should desist from making public statements relating to current internal party issues.

3. The Council of Elders put emphasis on the need to concentrate on issues relevant to the welfare of the people of Ghana and which should be of supreme concern to the party.

4. The Council of Elders directed that the embargo on press statements also include the electronic and social media and that anyone who violates this stipulation will be subject to the full application of the Party’s disciplinary procedures.

5. The Council of Elders takes this opportunity to assure the people of Ghana that the future of the country and the welfare of all citizens is so important to the Party that nothing will be spared in ensuring that the party remains united and focused to organize to secure a change in the administration of this country to alleviate the hardships of the good citizens of Ghana.
