The Christian Council of Ghana is calling on government to hand over the yet to be constructed 200 community day Senior High Schools (SHS) to the churches.

The Council says the churches in Ghana have shown their competence in running schools through the management of mission schools.

Government, in its 2012 manifesto, pledged to build 200 Community Day SHS across the country to increase access to secondary education in underprivileged districts.

President Mahama has already cut sod for work on the first batch of 50 new community day SHS to commence.

Speaking to Citi News, General Secretary of the Christian Council, Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni Frimpong said the schools should be handed over to the churches since they have “shown over the years that they are worthy partners in managing educational institutions.”

He noted that though the churches have had challenges, it has a track record of also managing schools and instilling good morals and discipline in students.

He therefore asked government to consider the churches involvement in education in the coming years.

“We are drawing government’s attention that the churches are still interested in that new area that we are moving towards as a country and we ask government to consider the churches involvement in education in the coming years with these new schools that government intends to set up,” he said.
