Two police officers in the Ashanti have been arrested for aiding the escape of their sons from police custody, who had been convicted for robbery.
The two have been arrested alongside the lead inspector in the case, who was said to have been bribed to aid the convicts’ escape.
The three are identified as Chief Inspector Kennedy Kwame Nyanteh with the Twedie Police station, Inspector William Armah with the Ashanti Regional Visibility and Detective unit, and Sergeant Kyei Mensah at the Ashanti Regional Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
According to a statement signed by the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, COP Ken Yeboah, the officers were arrested on Wednesday, January 2018 when it was detected that the two convicted prisoners could not be traced.
The pair; Emmanuel Kwame Nyanteh and Frederick Asante, were found guilty by the KMA Circuit Court for robbery, and sentenced to Eleven (11) and ten (10) years with hard labour respectively on October 12, 2017.
The statement also disclosed that, one of the convicts Kwame Nyanteh, 33, was rearrested today [Friday].
The statement said preliminary investigations identified detective Sergeant Mensah as the investigator of the case, who also aided the escape of the convicts by not taking them to the Kumasi Central Prisons to serve their respective sentences.
The statement added that, the investigator admitted aiding the escape of the convicts, and stated that the two other officers influenced him with GHc 1,000 to free the convicts.
The statement further indicated that the chief Inspector, Kwame Nyanteh and Inspector Armah, after their arrest, also admitted influencing the investigator with the said amount.
The Command, however, indicated that, efforts are underway to apprehend the other escapee, Frederick Asante, 28, who is currently at large.
COP Yeboah stated that, the Command will not protect officers who misconduct themselves in the line of duty.
The Command has also instituted a team to delve into all closed cases to establish whether or not convicts are always taken to Prison after they have been sentenced by the court.
