judgesPresident John Dramani Mahama is promising government’s commitment in supporting the judiciary in dispensing justice without fear or favor.

This he said is necessary because of the peculiar role the judiciary plays as arbiters. The President said this when he welcomed visiting Brazilian Chief Justice, Joaquim Barbosa who is in the country to share experiences with the supreme court of Ghana on effectively fighting corruption.

According to the President, Ghana’s judiciary is growing
and one of the major focuses in governance is how to strengthen the institutions of democracy “so even though Ghana is touted as a model of democracy, we still have a lot of work to do to strengthen the institutions that support that democracy.”

He indicated that the judiciary is very important because “when things come to a deadlock, it is finally the judges of the courts who unlock the deadlock.”

President Mahama clarified that government respects the judiciary and will therefore “do everything possible to provide the facilities to create an atmosphere in which our judges dispense the mandate given them.”

Leading the delegation to the Presidency was Supreme Court Judge Justice, William Atuguba who described the visit as timely.
