Former President Jerry John Rawlings has asked President Mahama show a clear commitment to the fight against corruption by addressing the unprecedented levels of corruption within his government.
”… . People with conscience are sometimes appalled by the extreme insensitivity displayed by some political appointees. The unprecedented levels of corruption, offensive show of power and opulence by some at a time when our country requires prudence and frugality is something that I call on President Mahama and his vice to set their eyes on,’’ he said.
He further accused some government appointees of being show-offs.
Mr. Rawlings wondered why appointees of government will be engaged in such acts when the country has economic issues to deal with.
Mr. Rawlings was speaking at a ceremony at the University of Education, Winneba on Thursday where he was given an honorary doctrate degree.
The the ex-president said the corruption canker cannot be dealt with if ‘’we do not take on leaders and so-called untouchables’’.
“We need to restore Ghana to a status of a country worth dying for,” he stated.
He also urged the individual Ghanaian to also stop blaming government for all the current economic, social-political woes and work to tackle the indiscipline that has engulfed the country.
The NDC founder tasked Ghanaians to remain incorruptible too.
“Remove the log in your own eyes,” he said to Ghanaians before attempting to correct a corrupt leader, he added.
Mr. Rawlings also called for a collective effort in fighting the deadly Ebola various.
‘’It is imperative that the relevant institutions intensify their readiness to confront the disease; I feel sad when I hear medical personnel talk of how they will flee if they suspect a patient to be infected with the virus,’’ he opined.
