A section of Ghanaians have called for strict law enforcement in order to protect the public against health implication due to an alert of listeriosis disease in South Africa.
Ghana has been advised to work to restrict food imports from South Africa following reported cases of the Listeriosis disease in that country.
A document sighted by Citi Business News indicated that Rwanda has already banned the imports of selected food items from South Africa due to the disease.
Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Health Ministry have also announced that they have intensified their surveillance at the various borders to prevent the possible entry of infested products.
But the public, some of whom have been speaking to Citi Business News suggested an outright ban if Ghana picks signals of possible entry of the infested products.
“I am not aware anyway but I find it difficult why products of such nature will come into Ghana without authorities not knowing about it. So I will call for a total ban on it if it is detected; in any case we have our Embassies at the country of origin so it should be able to prevent them before they are further sent to Ghana,” one concerned citizen stated.
Another remarked, “I think we have the appropriate organizations like the Food and Drugs Authority because sometimes these things may not be the accurate information. So what the government must do is to ban those goods that come in.”
Meanwhile, a third respondent also maintained, “I’m not aware of the companies involved in the importation of such goods in the country and so all I’ll need is for the government to ban such products and visit the various shops to check conformity.”
