Long before the decision to appoint a technical advisor, Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah had demanded it as part of recommendations in his report as head coach of the Stars after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
In the said report, disclosed to the Graphic Sports by a Ghana Football Association (GFA) source, Coach Appiah reportedly stated that following his experience at the World Cup, he required technical assistance in his effort to rebuild the Stars from the ruins of Brazil 2014.
And it appears with this new development, Appiah has placed his job on a six-month probation any period, as the arrangement to hire a technical advisor had been tied to Ghana’s participation at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco next January.
According to FA sources, the hiring of the technical advisor, whose appointment was last Monday handed to a three-man search committee chaired by Fred Crentsil, Vice president of the GFA, with Francis Oti-Akenten and Fred Pappoe as members, would be on temporary basis.
The move, according to the source, was to strengthen the technical team of the national team ahead of the 2015 Nations Cup qualifiers which kicks off on September 3, with the Stars taking on their Ugandan counterparts in the first match.
The appointment of a technical advisor is expected to be at an additional cost to government and the GFA, with the new technical arrangement used in both the qualifiers and the tournament after which the FA will make an assessment of its effectiveness. However, in the unlikely event that the Stars fail to qualify for AFCON 2015 or perform abysmally at the tournament in Morocco, Appiah might lose his job together with the technical advisor.
Already, the coach has signed a deal which guarantees him a $36,500 monthly salary and is entitled to compensation, if the GFA decides to fire him.
