The Ministry of Roads and Highways has temporarily opened the Ayi Mensah Peduase Lodge Aburi road to traffic for the Christmas period.

The Ghana Highway Authority announced the closure of the “south-bound” lane of the  Ayi Mensah Peduase lodge Aburi road in May 2016.

This was to pave way for repair works to be executed on the hills along the road.

[contextly_sidebar id=”hITmcU2LhD5q1fn9WcGCVEWjd6ChtfBc”]Speaking to the press after opening the road, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako Attah, said the road has opened because it has attained minimum safety level, and it cannot continue to be opened indefinitely.

“This road was closed to traffic last year, to be specific in May 2016 for work to be carried out. You know that we have been having problem with falling rocks, so we had to close this road for the sake of safety to deal with that. Originally, the contract period was for 12 months, but because of the execution of the job, it became necessary  to extend by few months up to September this year, that period has since lapsed, we have gone over it, but it is not yet fully completed”.

He added that the road is a very important road, and with Christmas approaching, it needs to be opened.

Background

The road, which was constructed along the Aburi hills connects the capital city, Accra to the Eastern Region.

The lane had become a death trap in recent times because some of the rocks on the hill have been falling on the road at an alarming rate.

Some observers had opined that, the hill may give way soon if immediate steps are not taken to address the problem.
