Some houses at the Buduburam Refugee Camp in the Central Region were demolished on Saturday under the supervision of the Ghana Police Service.

The Buduburam camp houses over 12,000 Liberian refugees who fled their country during the first and second Liberian civil war in the late 90s.

It was established by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in 1990 for the Liberian refugees.

The exercise was ordered by the Catholic Clinic commenced at exactly 6am on Saturday.

The demolition exercise is to make way for some infrastructural projects which falls part of the hospital’s plans to upgrade.

Speaking to Citi News, some residents in the area complained bitterly about the short-term notice given to them prior to demolition of their buildings.

Narrating the incident to Citi News, one of the affected persons said: “We were in our house and the Police asked us to go out and remove everything. They have finished breaking our houses we have nowhere to go. All our things are out on the street.”

Another witness added that “they did not inform us. They came this morning and started pulling the houses down. Right now, as I speak to you there is nowhere for us to go.”
