About 200 students of the School of Hygiene on Tuesday demonstrated on some principal streets in Accra to demand the restoration of their allowances.
The demonstration, which began from the Obra spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, ended at the Hearts of Oak Park near the Arts Centre.
Speaking to Citi News, the students complained that government has not been fair to them since the allowances of their colleagues in the various nurse and teacher training colleges have been restored.
“The government said they will restore the allowances, but it seems it was just a partial restoration. The schools around Korle Bu have received theirs, but students from Accra School of Hygiene, Ho School of Hygiene, Tamale School of Hygiene, none of us has received anything. There are those who have received the allowances for two times, and they will soon receive a third one, but it seems government has neglected those of us from the various schools of hygiene,” one of the students lamented.
Another student bemoaned the delay in restoring their allowances, saying “our allowances should be given to us, why are you [government] neglecting us?”
“We want our money, Nana wants to deceive us. We will not rest until we receive our money,” one of the students stated.
Agric students also demand allowances
Students of the five Colleges of Agric have already picketed at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to demand the restoration of their allowances, and even boycotted lectures for three weeks.
They subsequently called off the boycott after receiving assurances from the sector Minister.
Allied health graduates demand posting
In another development, some graduates from the Allied Health College in Kintampo today, Tuesday, besieged the Ministry of Health to demand financial clearance.
According to the agitated health professionals, who have had earlier embarked on a similar protest, government has turned a blind eye on their plight, while their colleagues have received their monies and are working.
The health professionals who slept over at the ministries, told Citi News that they won’t back down until they receive financial clearance.
