Five years ago today [Tuesday], what started as a very normal day, ended as one of the tragic moments Ghanaians have not forgotten.

14 people died and several others were maimed when the six-storey Melcom shopping mall at Achimota in Accra collapsed.

This shook the nation to the core and even caught the attention of international media.

The then President, John Mahama, described the accident as needless, and promised drastic measures would be taken to avert any such future disaster.

Sadly, the cycle unfortunately continues. But how many more years can we go until such preventable disasters are completely avoided in Ghana?

Citi News’ Eugenia Tenkorang looks back at what measures were announced at the time to forestall any such disaster, and what has changed.
