The Dzodze Magistrate Court has convicted a man for assaulting a staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and illegally taping electricity, after he pleaded guilty of the offences.
Presenting the facts of case to the court on Friday, the police prosecutor said, the suspect, Mac-Billy Ani, was allegedly caught last month by an ECG technician illegally connecting electricity to his Ehi-Biase Kpota home in the Ketu North District of the Volta Region.
The Technician, Emmanuel Agbemadu, on one of his routine checks on their customers, observed that Mac-Billy illegally tapped supply after being disconnected for defaulting.
Emmanuel then disconnected the illegal connections.
Just when the Technician was about leaving the scene, the suspect arrived home and ordered him to re-fix the cables.
In an ensuing confrontation, the suspect took offence and pounced on the complainant; punching him in the face several times.
It took some young men in the locality hectic time to rescue the complainant from the firm grips of the suspect. With blood oozing profusely from Emmanuel’s nostrils and mouth, he was whisked to the police station and later to the hospital.
An assessment conducted by the Loss Control Unit of the Electricity Company of Ghana in Ho confirmed that electricity was illegally tapped without recourse to the company.
The accused, who initially pleaded not guilty to the offence, later changed his plea to guilty with explanation upon his second appearance in court.
He explained that the complainant provoked him by first piercing him with his working tool.
The accused has been granted bail in the sum of GHC40,000 by the Denu High Court, to a credible surety pending final judgment.
