Following pressure from Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is expected to present the cost details for the new smart driver’s license to the Committee later today [Thursday].

This follows the Committee’s demand for the information after a crucial meeting in Parliament on Tuesday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”d71dGfvBczY9xWAFVMcoMIogueQ8b7Bh”]The new smart driver’s license, which has enhanced features, is expected to be rolled out by the DVLA on November 7. But it has been met with concerns from drivers on the cost of acquisition.

The Chairman of Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee, Samuel Aye Paye, speaking to Citi News about the committee’s request for information from the DVLA, said details on the price build up, among others, were expected.

“We also complained about the retention of their revenue. The government is taking about 65 percent, and the committee has asked them to put that concern in this budget so that we engage the Ministry of Finance and see how best we can [deal with that],” he said.

Acquiring the new driver’s license will attract an additional Gh₵91 separate from the present charges on all other services, including replacement (Gh₵64 + Gh₵91 = Gh₵155), new license (Gh₵166 +Gh₵91 = Gh₵257) and transferring a foreign license to Ghanaian one (Gh₵364 + Gh₵91 = Gh₵445).

Expectations of new vehicle registration smart card.

  • It is expected to enhance the vehicle registration process because application and processing could be done online.
  • It simplifies the transfer of ownership of motor vehicles registered in another jurisdiction and eliminates to compose transfer letter(s).
  • It enables frontline officers of the Authority to determine the information of vehicle owners during the registration process in cases where vehicles were previously registered in another jurisdiction.
