Some New Patriotic Party Youth in the Volta Region, have added their voice to calls for the reinstatement of suspended General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.

Addressing the media at a press conference in Ho on Wednesday, the youth described the embattled General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong, as an indispensable asset to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), whose relegation apart from being an affront to accolade of the party as lovers of democracy, is affecting the general welfare of the party.

[contextly_sidebar id=”KyM6OOpJl9xDtAxCqHZADnyN72kKwlIV”]“We deeply appreciate the tactful way KAA, as affectionately called, smoothly managed and supervised the two-staged presidential primary and crucially, the parliamentary contests across the country which contributed immensely to the historic majority the party won in the parliamentary election. At the time of his suspension, only a handful of constituencies were outstanding. It has now emerged that some of the far-sighted and strategic decisions KAA took and for which reason he was suspended, such as granting of waivers, were crucial and needed after all,”they said.

The group led by Roland Kaykay Fiakpui, also questioned the interests of individuals who are vehemently rejecting suggestions to reinstate the suspended executive.

“As a political tradition, we have been touted as the kingpins of democracy and our respect for constitutionality is acclaimed. However, the unfortunate remarks emanating from some national officers clearly portrays an intention to perpetuate the suspension till the tenure of our GS runs out in April 2018. Is it any surprise that those who are the direct beneficiaries of the suspensions are the most vociferous against his reinstatement?,” he quizzed.

They are therefore calling on President Akufo-Addo to intervene by tempering justice with mercy.

“We wish to employ your esteemed media platforms to join and identify with the numerous calls from our compatriots in the Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo, Greater Accra and Northern regions to appeal to the National Council of the NPP and particularly the President of the Republic His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, to respectfully and humbly appea to him to exercise the best endeavours of his high office as Father of all and Leader of our party to intervene to bring finality to the matter of the continued suspension from office of our elected General Secretary” they added.

Why Agyepong was suspended

Mr. Agyepong was suspended in December 2015 for publicly rebelling against the party’s decision to indefinitely suspend the party’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko.

He was suspended alongside the party’s Second Vice Chairman, Sammy Crabbe.

The National Executive Committee of the party found him guilty of violating Article 3(D) of the party’s constitution which enjoins members to publicly uphold the decisions of the party, through various acts.

He was also accused of engaging in “unilateral actions and activities without consultation of, or authorization by the NEC [National Executive Council].”

More NPP members demand Agyepong’s reinstatement

Some members of the party recently besieged the NPP head office in Accra to demand the reinstatement of Mr. Agyepong.

The group expressed concerns that there were veiled attempts to expel Kwabena Agyapong from the party.
