DOCTORSHealth officials at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have officially withdrawn their services, effective Friday, February 14, 2014.

This was made known in a letter delivered to the hospital management on Friday.

The decision was informed by an attack on them on Thursday by some irate youth who were demanding the body of a stillborn baby who was delivered at the hospital last week.

The health personnel are also demanding that the hospital management and the Ashanti Regional Security Council take steps to ensure that open threats of a second attack on their lives by the aggrieved family members are dealt with the and perpetrators arrested.

They are further demanding that the hospital management organize a press conference to give further explanation on the incident to the public.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has served notice that if the hospital does not increase the number of police personnel at the hospital premises, its members will be ordered to stay home to safeguard their lives.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, the Public Relations Officer at KATH, Kwame Frimpong stated that the hospital is planning to schedule a meeting with the leadership of the GMA to iron out the matter and find a lasting solution to it.

He disclosed that plain clothed police personnel are currently manning the various vantage points at the hospital.

“We’ve been having a series of meeting with the Regional Police Command and they have outlined all the strategies that they have adopted. They have sent a lot of plain clothed Police men to guard some other vantage points…and they are helping to monitor the situation,” said Mr. Frimpong.
