The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has denied claims that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is “up for sale” in fulfillment of conditions attached to the second Millennium Challenge Compact.
Some media reports indicate that government had resolved to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as part of a condition to access the second compact of the Millennium Challenge Account, worth over $500 million.
But a press statement issued by the Ministry and signed by the Minister of Energy, Armah Kofi Buah, described the reports as “untrue”.
He explained that the second compact has been carefully developed to “holistically address challenges in the entire power supply value chain, specifically in generation, transmission, distribution, sector regulation and capacity building.”
The Ministry said that although Ghana has been selected among a few countries to benefit from a second compact programme under the US government, “the compact would focus on specific interventions in the power sub-sector aimed at increasing electricity access and reliability.
He added that the efforts at resolving Ghana’s energy distribution challenges should not be seen as sale of ECG or Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
