The Centre for Transformational Leadership (CTL) in Africa has called for a redefinition of the concept of leadership in Africa through the introduction of a new curriculum of education from the basic level through to all higher levels of the educational system.
The Centre, which aims to bridge the gap between traditional education and real life, believes the process will bring about the socio-economic change needed to improve the standard of living in the country.
Speaking at a press conference held in Accra, the Chief Executive Officer for CTL Africa, Samuel Ayim said the concept of leadership as a position, from where all solutions should emanate is a flawed one that can be corrected with the right approach.
According to the CEO, each individual is capable of influencing change and must not necessarily be dependent on one’s position or appointment, hence the need to inculcate good leadership skills among individuals from the basic school level.
“If we continue with this notion that leadership is power and ones position, then when someone get elected into office they will start to think about just themselves, but if we change this concept of leadership then people can start to add value to themselves and to others and that will make a fundamental difference in the way things are run in a society.” He further added that the centre was ready to roll out some programs targeting all segment of the society.
“We started the youth max, which was to teach servant-leadership and how it will benefit the society. A lot of the time, we put people into leadership positions when they have not learnt leadership from the beginning. We have to get to the stage where children will know the influence they have on their fathers and the leadership role they all play. That is our main aim as a centre” he said.
He urged Ghanaians to support the agenda so the transformation will be felt and Africans recognised for their leadership skills as against the cliché of people in countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and even Rwanda, being constantly used as example of what leadership among the citizens can do to bring change.
