President John Dramani Mahama says he will treat the concerns of Organised Labour’s demonstration with all the seriousness it deserves as it has inspired him to ‘’work harder.’’
‘’…I have noted all the public manifestations and criticisms expressed about the state of the economy over the last several weeks; I have also noted the recent demonstration by Organised Labour. As a social democrat the working people are my natural allies; i therefore treat their concerns with all the seriousness they deserve,’’ he added.
Speaking at the 2014 edition of Eid-Ul Fitr prayers at the Kumasi Central Mosque, he stated that the message contained in the Organised Labour demonstration is ‘’an encouragement [for him] to work harder on matters of the economy’’.
The President also assured and promised workers that ‘’there are calmer waters ahead.”
He noted that he spends most of his time on issues relating to the economy and the energy sector.
‘’As captain of the ship of state, i can assure you that the signs of recovery will manifest in the latter part of this year for all of us to see,’’ he added.
He also revealed that he will preside over a meeting of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Economic Recovery, which will implement measures to restore the economy into prosperity.
‘’We will work to stabilize the currency, to bring down inflation and bring down interest rate,’’ he said.
He mentioned that government has had to implement ‘’some painful but necessary measures to protect the national economy and prevent a meltdown’’.
Organised Labour and other groups have been demonstrating and protesting the last one month for the current economic hardship in the country.
President Mahama also used the occasion to congratulate all Muslims across the country for a successful Ramadan and thanked all religious leaders in the country for the tolerance and the peaceful co-existence in the country.
“I urge believers of all religious faiths to continue in this spirit of unity, common purpose and togetherness as we all join our faiths together and pray for the nation; we are all one people and therefore religion must never ever divide us, but rather unite us,’’ he advised.
President Mahama finally cautioned the youth to celebrate the occasion in moderation. ‘’It is a day of excitement and celebration, it is not a day of death and so please let us ride the motorcycles cautiously.’’
