The family of the man who was knocked down and killed by the vehicle of the Deputy Upper East Regional Minister; Daniel Syme is accusing the Police of refusing to arrest the Minister.

Mr. Syme’s vehicle knocked down Robert Abuley and his companion who were riding a motorbike on Thursday evening.

The brother of the deceased, Stanley Abopan on Eyewitness News alleged that the deputy Minister sped off after the accident “and never returned.”

Some passersby reportedly conveyed the two victims to the Bolgatanga Government Hospital where Abuley later died on Friday.

Abopan narrated that the deputy Minister failed to visit the victims at the hospital until some residents besieged his office to demand an explanation for his actions.

“To our utmost surprise, the deputy Minister said he didn’t even know he had knocked human beings; he thought he had hit donkeys,” he said.

The explanation, according to Abopan, annoyed the residents because “we have not seen donkeys riding motorbikes in this region before.”

He said they know that the deputy Minister was the driver behind the wheels when the accident occurred since “he has not denied. He has said that he drove the vehicle and the Police have said that it was vehicle and they know that. Syme cannot deny that and neither will the Police  deny that.”

Abopan further accused Mr. Syme of failing to report the matter to the Police. He said even after the family reported the matter, the Police have failed to bring in the Deputy Minister for questioning.

“We are aware that we have one law, but we are not aware of another law for the elite, the rich and another one for the poor and vulnerable,” he fumed.

He advised the President to sit up and scrutinize the persons he appoint to serve in his government “because if we can have characters like Daniel Syme who is supposed to be our deputy Regional Minister…then I think that our President should be nodding his head not in appreciation but in total disgust.”
