Government says lack of space and encroachment of the Kumasi airport lands is stalling efforts to turn the airport into an international one.

This follows questions as to why government has opted to build an international airport in Tamale despite considerable traffic at the Kumasi airport.

Work on the upgrade of the Tamale airport to an international one will start by close of July, 2014.

Speaking on the Citi breakfast show the deputy minister of transport Bawah Mogtari said the 100-million dollar Tamale airport project is being undertaken because of land availability.

According to Joyce Bawah Mogtari government will still go ahead with plans to upgrade the Kumasi Airport into an international one.

The Ghana Airports Company is currently also upgrading the existing runway at the Kumasi airport.

Joyce Bawah Mogtari adds there are also plans to construct a new terminal at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to take pressure off the other terminals.

“Adverts will soon be placed for the construction of a new terminal at the KIA. This terminal, to be known as Terminal 3, will take pressure off Terminal 2 so that rehabilitation of that terminal can take off in earnest”

Meanwhile government has announced it will set up an Aviation fuel depot in Tamale.
