Coach of Ghana’s boxing team at the Games, the Black Bombers, Ofori Asare, says he hopes the team can be an improvement on the nation’s previous performances at the Games.

Ghana has won two bronze medals in the last two editions of the Commonwealth Games and coach Asare has told Citi Sports that he is confident of some good results from the team he handling at the moment.

“Ghana’s last two appearances in the Commonwealth Games (in Melbourne, 2006 and Delhi in 2010)  have resulted in bronze medals and so, we want to beat that. We want to go for the bigger prizes this time.”

He added that his years of experience at the various editions of the Games will help the boxers do well.

“The Commonwealth Games is a very huge tournament and Ghana has a good record there and for the athletes, this means a lot of pressure. But I have been here so many times and I know what it entails. I have won all the medals as part of the coaching team and I want to help the team achieve something in Scotland.”

The team is made up of Musa Lawson, Suleman Tetteh, who is the captain and the only survivor from the 2012 Olympics, David Bawa, who is a light heavy weight, Osumanu Haruna in the super heavy weight division, Jesse Lartey in the lightweight division, Azumah Mohammed in the welterweight division and Wahid Umar.

The boxing event at the Games begin on the 25th of July with the Men’s 69kg (welterweight) and Azumah Mohammed will be taking part in that event.
