The Ghana Police Service has warned workers in the public service to be wary of the activities of fraudsters who have devised new strategies to defraud them.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police said the fraudsters pose as staff of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to lure unsuspecting public sector workers to pay them various sums under the threat of freezing their salaries.
The statement signed by Chief Inspector David Fianko-Okyere said, “it has come to the notice of the Police that the fraudsters are targeting public sector workers posing as staff of Controller and Accountant General’s Department.”
According to him, “these fraudsters place telephone calls to unsuspecting public sector workers requesting their biometric social security numbers for a purported account reconciliation.”
“In the course of communication, the fraudsters demand some unspecified amount from the workers and then truncate communication thereafter.”
“Recipients of these fraudulent calls are threatened with stoppage of their salaries if they fail to comply with their demands.”
It, therefore, urged public sector workers to be vigilant and refrain from sharing their personal detail via social media and phone to persons they are uncertain about.
“Members of the public especially public sector workers are advised not to share their personal details on phone and other social media platforms and report any suspicion to the nearest Police Station.”
