The Inspector General of Police, David Asante Appeatu has sent a stern warning to political vigilante groups and other lawbreakers saying their actions will no longer be tolerated.

He has therefore charged his officers to deal decisively with such elements in society according to law.

Despite expressing similar sentiments on previous platforms, some Civil society organizations and members of the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have complained about what they say is the seeming state of lawlessness in the country.

Recently, the Chairman of the Council of State, Nana Nana Otuo Siriboe II, called on the President to take urgent steps to address the incidents of indiscipline and lawlessness which he said was becoming a canker in society.

The lynching and murder of Major Maxwell Mahama at Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region in May, has also raised debates about the effectiveness of the country’s security agencies especially the Police Service, who have the constitutional mandate of maintaining law and order in the country.

But addressing a National Police Command Conference in the Ashanti Region, the IGP said the police must tackle crime without political considerations.

“Do not hesitate to deal with law breakers. The laws of this country do not wear political colours. Neither has crime any political affiliation, let us be firm, impartial and above all professional in the discharge of our duties…Such acts of impunity and lawlessness can no longer be condoned. Such cowardly behavior of a few social deviants cannot hold us back. The death of any single Ghanaian on the platform of violence and or impunity is one too many,” David Asante-Appeatu said.

Meanwhile, the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, has urged the police to work hard to correct the largely held perception of corruption held against them by the public.
