Reinstate my clients in ‘gold scam’ case – Kissi Agyabeng to police

The lawyer for the interdicted police officers at the centre of the gold scam, Kissi Agyabeng, is demanding an immediate reinstatement of his clients by the police administration.

He argues that the Police administration wrongfully treated the officers as suspects and victimized them.

[contextly_sidebar id=”p9XeqC4Gmag5pZMnOdu9u9HCuGQWSaRU”]Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Agyabeng said the Police administration erred in its handling of the matter.

He said, “They are treating them as suspects. They’ve been treating them as suspects since February when they went on interdiction. They should be part of the solution rather than they been bastardized and unfairly roped in as part of the problem.”

There is a growing controversy over a GH¢1.3m gold scam that has seen the interdiction of the former East Legon police commander, DSP Emmanuel Basintale, RSM John Sovor, Corporal Baleto Boafour, Lance Corporal Ignatius Asamoah Mensah and Lance Corporal Cyrus Conduah.

A US firm, Green Global Resources at the center of the issue believed to have paid the amount for the gold, is accusing the police service of shielding the criminals involved in the case.

But the Police administration has discounted the allegations, saying that it is still following due processes to bring closure to the matter. However, the lawyer for the interdicted officers argues that, the treatment being meted out to his clients by the Police administration is not right.

“They [my clients] were the first line in with respect to this whole business, and if you turn around to then demonize them and make them suspects and free the actual suspects only for you to turn around months later to then declare these same suspects as your free as wanted men, you clearly have made a mistake. You should admit that mistake, apologize to my clients and reinstate them,” he said.

The Police have said they are still investigating the matter of corruption against the five, and can only reinstate them after it finds them not guilty at the end of the investigations.

The  IGP has dared the officers to go to court and sue the service if they so wish.
