The Police administration has discounted claims that it has neglected one of its fallen men, Lance Corporal Kumi Ackah.

The Lance Corporal was shot dead by his colleagues who mistook him to be an armed robber  under bizarre circumstances near Dawadawa, while in the line of duty.

[contextly_sidebar id=”HiZKOk4b5SXGhSEo8odm1isGOyoyhSCG”]A section of the public has criticized the Police of neglecting one of its own while showing massive support to the Late Major Maxwell Adam Mahama.

But speaking to Citi News, the outgoing Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Cephas Arthurs, says while the fallen Policeman may not be accorded the same respects as the late Major Mahama, the service has put in place adequate measures to console the bereaved family.

“We have not ignored Lance Corporal Ackah. We are according him honour that he deserves as a serving police officer who lost his life in life of duty at the command of the IGP. So if you see him[IGP] with the military high command, the president and officials of the state going about these state functions he is doing so because it is a responsibility that he is performing,” he contends.

The two deaths are not the same

According to Superintend Arthur, the lynching of the Late Major Mahama has in itself generated much sympathy as compared to the killing of Lance Corporal Ackah.

“These are two different situations all together. Let us look at a death resulting from lynching, something that we have all been decrying and we sit back and allow it to happen in the way that it happened to the Major, definitely it will attract the kind of sympathy it has attracted. And I dare say with all conviction that if the Lance Corporal died under the same circumstance, it would have attracted the same attention as the late Major.

What have the Police done for the family?

According to Superintendent Arthur “the Regional Command ensured that they paid her [the widow] regular visits to console and commiserate with her to ensure that she is not destabilized emotionally.”

“The Police has also made a cash donation of GHc 5,000.00 to the bereaved spouse and the children to ensure that they are able to cater for their immediate needs in the absence of the breadwinner. Additionally, I am told Unique Insurance also came and donated GHc 5,000.00 to the Police to be presented to the bereaved family.”
