The National Petroleum Authority (NPA), has donated an amount of GHc 150, 000 to be used to offset some of the medical bills of the victims of the May 9th gas explosion in Takoradi that injured some 152 persons.

Some corporate organizations and religious bodies have since been donating medical items as well as cash, to the 11 member committee established by the Western Regional Minister, Dr. Kwake Afriyie, and chaired by the Deputy Western Regional Minister, Gifty Eugenia Kusi, to investigate the circumstances that led to the explosion.

Speaking at the presentation, the Executive Director of the NPA, Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, noted that, apart from authorizing the establishment and regulating the various Oil Marketing Companies, “it is also our social responsibility to assist in times like this”.

He added that as “a regulator, we think it’s the right thing to do as others have done, to throw in our support, to be given to the victims as you have been doing already”.

Both the regional minister and his deputy assured the NPA of ensuring that the donated amount is used to take care of the victims of the explosion.

A stationary gas tank and a gas discharging tanker both exploded in the early hours of Tuesday, May 9th,2017, injuring passersby, firefighters and some security officers.

The victims were sent to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the Takoradi government hospital, the GHAPOHA hospital and the New Takoradi Health Center.

Many of the victims have since been treated and discharged, whilst others have had to be airlifted to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, and the Cape Coast Teaching Hospitals.

Some others are still on admission at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, and the three other hospitals in the metropolis.
