The West Akyem Municipal Directorate in the Eastern region is currently struggling to deal with high rate of teenage pregnancy in the area.
This was revealed by the acting Municipal Public Health Nurse Evelyn Osae Bia Nyakoa who says 14 cases were recorded among girls between the ages of 10and14 years in 2013 whiles 857 cases came from girls between 15-19 years.
She further indicated that some of the cases were not recorded.
Citi News’ Eastern Regional Correspondent Kwame Appiah Kubi spoke to the Nurse Nyakoa who expressed deep concern about the increase in teenage pregnancies.
“She said the involvement of school girls is devastating. More school girls are becoming victim of the situation and becoming school dropouts, while some male students become perpetrators of the act and in the process also halting their education.”
According to her the teenage mothers become delinquents.
She also emphasized poverty, broken homes the absence of teaching of life skills and cultural studies among other factors that promote teenage pregnancies. She therefore called for all possible approaches to deal with this situation.
