Some Ghanaians have expressed anger at the recent increase in both fuel prices and transport fares.
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) on Sunday announced a 23 percent increment in petrol, 22 percent in diesel and 23.75 percent in kerosene to the displeasure of many.
The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has also announced a 15 percent increment in transport fare citing increment in petroleum products.
But some Ghanaians who spoke to Citi News on the streets of Accra expressed their displeasure at the two increments.
“Every blessed day, they have been increasing without good motives and moreover, we don’t even see the essence of the increment. It doesn’t make sense to the public,” a passenger told Citi News.
He pleaded with the government to increase salaries concurrently with fuel increments because “times are hard.”
Another also lamented saying, “living in Ghana now is very hard and the situation is very bad and we need to survive. Our leaders must do something about it.”
He bemoaned the recent increment in utility tariffs coupled with the hikes in fuel prices and transport fares “our leaders must certainly do something about because we are really suffering.”
But the government says the decision had to be made because it was spending huge sums on money on paying subsidies.
Deputy Energy Minister, John Jinapor said other vital sectors of the economy are bound to benefit with the removal of subsidies.”
