Doctor, two medical personnel dead in Akim Anyinase car crash

Eight persons, including medical doctors and staff of the Kumasi South Hospital, have been involved in an accident at Akim Anyinase in the Eastern Region.

The accident, which involved a Kia Grandbird bus and a Toyota Fortuner, claimed the life of a medical doctor and two other medical staff.

Confirming the accident to Citi News, the Eastern Regional Police PRO, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, said, “at about 8:00am on April 29, suspect driver, Akuffo Jonas, aged 32, was driving a Kia Grandbird bus with registration number  GT 4921-15 with passengers on board from Kumasi to Akim Wenchi ,and on reaching a steel bridge over the Aku river near Akim Anyinase, the driver claimed that his brakes failed him and as a result, he ran into a Toyota Fortuner private car with registration number GT 6284–14 belonging to Kumasi South Hospital. The Fortuner was driven by suspect driver William Larbi aged 60yrs, with other 3 persons on board, Dr. Patience Fleisher aged 58 years, and Philomena Kwayie aged 58 years, all died on the spot.”

ASP Ebenezer Tetteh added that, the injured were taken to the Akim Oda and Okomfo Anokye hospitals.

“The private car driver and Dr. Kwame Ofori Boadu, aged 40 years, together with two occupants of the commercial bus sustained injuries and were rushed to Akim Oda  Government Hospital for treatment, where victims Kwame Ofori Boadu, William Larbi and Kwabena Sefah aged 29 years, were referred to Emergency and Accident Centre at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Kumasi for further treatment. The two bodies were conveyed and deposited at the Akim Oda Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy.”

ASP Ebenezer Tetteh added that, the driver of the bus is in police custody to assisting with further investigations.
