The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has asked the public to disregard information circulating on social media about the alleged importation of a fake brand of Malta Guinness onto the Ghanaian market.

The FDA said there was no fake brand of the product on the market, explaining that there were two brands of the Malta Guinness beverage, but the two were imported into the country by two different companies; Guinness Breweries Ghana Limited and Addra Sari Limited.

The former imported the product from Nigeria, whereas the latter imported it from Togo. However, the two brands are registered by the FDA.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, Delese A.A Darko on Thursday.

The statement encouraged the public to provide the FDA any information that was likely to endanger public health and safety with respect to its mandate.

It reiterated the organisation’s commitment towards ensuring the protection of public health and safety. Meanwhile, the company in a Facebook post to discredit rumours of the fake product also said the two were genuine.

“Reference to comments on social media about Malta Guinness cans, we would like to state that Malta Guinness is a premium brand from Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL), a subsidiary of Diageo PLC which operates in over 180 countries over the world.”

“Both cans trending on social media are genuine Malta Guinness products, brewed in our sister company in Nigeria and a Licenced Brewer in Togo. We’re now in our third decade of brewing Ghana’s most loved Malt right here in Ghana,” it said.
