Delle’s illegitimate chairmanship will collapse CPP – Youth League

The National Youth League of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), have reiterated their claims that the existence of the party is being threatened by the party’s chairman, Professor Edmund Delle.

According to them, the pitiful state of the party was as a result of the kind of leadership provided by the chairman.

[contextly_sidebar id=”dFuySxdxs0ZoiQx3eredo1WdTSzCcqCU”]In a statement signed by the secretary of the youth league of the party, Hardi Yakubu, it described Mr. Delle’s leadership as illegitimate.

The youth contended that, Professor Delle was not democratically elected, neither was he elected by popular acclamation in accordance with Article 93 (e) of the party’s constitution.

“You will recall that at the Sunyani Congress in September 2015, he, Edmund Delle contested for the Chairmanship unopposed. Owing to this, he was declared Chairman and Leader without any process to validate his leadership. The process of making him Chairman was irregular and unconstitutional. He did not get the mandate of the people.”

“Not even a popular acclamation was done in the case of Prof Delle. Members therefore did not get the opportunity to accept his Chairmanship and for that matter did not give him their mandate. Prof. Delle has no legitimacy, constitutionally. An illegitimate leader has no interest in the growth of the organization he purports to lead. This explains why the party is where it is today.”

It further called on members of the party to rescue it.

“If we the members do not save the party, it will die a death. This is why I call on you to rise up and rescue the party,” it said.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP), Ghana’s oldest existing political party has in the last few decades failed to make significant impact on Ghana’s political terrain following the death of its founder and first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The party has seen some of its key members breaking away to form different political parties, further weakening its hold in Ghana’s politics.

Previous merger talks between the CPP and other political parties that share the ‘Nkrumahist’ ideas have failed to materialize.

The party’s performance in the last two elections have been abysmal with many blaming its chairman and 2016 flagbearer, Dr. Kobina Ivor Greenstreet for the outcome, having allegedly done the bidding of a bigger political party.

Meanwhile, the party is considering a proposal for merger with the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), which was founded by Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom; a break-away member of the party and former flagbearer, with the hope of boosting its chances in subsequent elections.
